What a Car Diagnostic Really Is — what does it check for & what It Should Include

Orange, CT — “Can you run a diagnostic on it?” is one of the most common requests a shop hears — and one of the most misunderstood. A diagnostic isn’t a magic machine that tells you exactly what’s wrong for a small fee. Done right, it’s a skilled investigation, and understanding what it involves helps you know what you’re paying for.

What a Diagnostic Actually Is

A diagnostic is the process of finding the cause of a symptom — not just reading a code. Modern cars store trouble codes when something goes wrong, and any parts store can plug in a scanner and read them for free. But a code is a clue, not a diagnosis. A P0420 code, for example, doesn’t mean “buy a catalytic converter” — it means the computer saw something in that circuit worth investigating.

Real diagnostics answers the question: why is this happening? That takes testing, measurements, and experience.

How It’s Performed

A proper diagnostic usually follows a process like this:

Interview — the technician asks when the problem happens: cold or hot, turning or straight, braking or accelerating. Symptoms that come and go are the hardest to catch, so details matter.

Scan the computer — trouble codes and live sensor data are pulled and reviewed. Freeze-frame data showing conditions when the fault set is often the most valuable part.

Verify the symptom — whenever possible, the tech drives or runs the vehicle to see the problem firsthand.

Visual and physical inspection — leaks, worn components, loose connections, damaged wiring.

Targeted testing — this is where diagnostics earns its name: voltage drop tests, pressure tests, scope readings, load testing circuits, isolating one component from another until the fault is found.

Findings and estimate — you get a clear explanation of what was found, what it will cost to fix, and what happens if you don’t.
What’s Included (and What Isn’t)

& other repairs that may be necessary to eliminate a problem if the initial repair doesn’t or only improves the situation.

At Morales Transmissions, the diagnostic fee is $140 plus tax, flat rate. That covers the investigation itself — the technician’s time, the equipment, and the testing needed to pinpoint the cause.

However, depending on the complexity of the problem & time required, we may request additional funds.

What's Worth knowing:

The diagnostic fee is separate from the repair. Even if you have the repair done at the same shop, the diagnosis is its own service & many locations may not bundle it in with the repair - including us.

It identifies the cause — it doesn’t fix anything. Repairs are quoted and priced separately. The only exception (at our shop anyway) is if the problem is simple (a connector, loose hardware); we can do the fix during the diagnostic.

Complex or intermittent problems can take longer. An issue that only appears once a week may require extended road testing or monitoring, which can add time or cost. That is why we’ll return the vehicle to you at this stage & ask you to come back if the symptoms return or the problem worsens. The last thing we want is to guess, take your money, & it doesn’t fix the problem.

Some diagnoses lead to more diagnoses. Finding a blown fuse leads to asking why it blew. Each layer is part of the same investigation. Sometimes, we need to make a repair before we can proceed with the rest of the investigation. A simple example: you come in complaining about a noise you’re hearing when you drive the vehicle at 60 mph; however, we can no longer reach that speed because the vehicle is losing power due to multiple-cylinder misfires. First, we will have to fix the problem causing the misfire & then begin to evaluate the noise you’re hearing.

Sometimes we have multiple possibilities that layer on each other - all potential factors causing the problem you’re having. At the shop we call them “onions”. Here’s a real-life example: a customer came in with a transmission code & Engine light on their Jaguar. It was a P0700 (Fault with Solenoid A) code. When we investigated his vehicle, we found the transmission fluid was very dirty & some of the residue could be causing the issue; however, the solenoid could also be bad, or the computer circuitry controlling the slot for solenoid A could be bad. What did we do? We changed the fluid & swapped solenoid A with its neighbor & advised the customer that if the light doesn’t return, his problem is fixed. If it did, the code would tell us whether the computer is failing (it would still report solenoid A) or whether the solenoid is bad (the code would now point to the new position that same solenoid moved to). Thankfully for this customer, the initial fluid change fixed his problem & he avoided some otherwise costly repairs.

Alternatives to a Paid Diagnostic

Free code reads at parts stores — fine for a starting point, but it tells you the code, not the cause. Use it as information to bring to your shop, not as an answer & definitely do NOT purchase parts based solely on that information.

Cheap OBD scanners at home — same story: good for watching live data and catching a check engine light early, but interpreting it is the hard part. You can pick up a decent scan tool on Amazon for under $100.

YouTube + a multimeter — a reasonable method for simple, visible problems (a torn intake boot, a dead battery terminal). It gets risky for anything involving fuel, transmission internals, or modern electronics, where a wrong guess gets expensive fast & may create new problems instead of solving them.

Throwing parts at it — the classic mistake. Replacing the part the code “points to” without testing often leaves you with a new part, the same symptom, and less money. West Haven drivers: if a shop hands you a repair quote straight from a free code read, that’s your cue to get a real diagnostic.

Things to Watch Out For

“Free diagnostic” offers. Often it’s just a code read - not a diagnostic. If the shop recommends a repair with no testing behind it, ask what they did to confirm the part is bad.

Vague findings. You should walk away knowing what failed, how they proved it, and what the fix involves, or at the very least - a logical line of thinking that tracks with what is being recommended. “It’s probably the module” isn’t a diagnosis.

Multiple repairs approved before testing is done. A thorough diagnostic narrows things down. If you’re handed a long list of parts to replace on day one, get a second opinion.

Things to Avoid

Don’t clear the codes before bringing the car in. That wipes the freeze-frame data technicians rely on, and can make an intermittent fault much harder (and costlier) to find.

Don’t ignore a flashing check engine light. A steady light usually means “get it checked soon.” A flashing light means an active misfire that can destroy a catalytic converter — drive it gently and get it in right away.

Don’t keep driving a slipping or overheating transmission. Heat is the fastest way to turn a small transmission repair into a replacement.

Don’t reset or disconnect the battery to “fix” a light. It clears the symptom, not the cause — and the fault will be back, with less data to work from.

The Bottom Line

A diagnostic is an investment in knowing, not guessing. At our shop it’s $140 plus tax, flat rate — and it buys you a tested, explained answer rather than a parts-store hunch. Once we know exactly what’s wrong, we can quote the repair, back it with our 1 year / 12,000 mile warranty, and get you back on the road with confidence.
